About the event
Following Windrush in 1948 the Jamaican influence was prominent on the streets of London and the
Jamaican population was particularly abundant in West London).
Born and raised in St Ann, Jamaica, Lawrence spent his earlier years on the island. During this time in Jamaica
Ska was the ‘in’ genre, before Reggae was founded and grew to dominate the scene in the late 1960’s.
In 1965, Lawrence migrated to the UK where he attended school for a short time in Northwest London before
moving to Gorton, Manchester where he would join 2 new schools, one of which he was the only black boy.
He then moved to Liverpool to complete the remainder of his secondary school years.
In 1973, Lawrence made his final move back to London where he resided in West London and that’s where the
true musical journey began to bloom. Lawrence describes his move to Shepherd’s Bush as his “eye-opener to
the West Indian London culture”. Lawrence stated that “back in the day people would say ‘West is Best!’’
Through this, Lawrence was introduced to the heart and beats of Reggae, Roots Reggae and Revival and the
passion grew from there.
Lawrence would ‘keep’ parties known then as ‘Shubeens’ or play out at other people’s events but, at 21 years
old, Lawrence wanted to delve deeper into the scene, so he went on to join King Tropical Sound System in
1977. His time with King Tropical was full ah vibes, they played all over and competed in sound clashes against
other big sounds such as Coxsone, Jah Shaka and Fatman, just to name a few.
At the age of 24, Lawrence (formerly known as DJ Reminisce) and a few close friends ventured onto creating
their own sound named Destiny where they went on to entertain the masses all over the UK, playing the best
of Roots, Reggae, Revival and Rare Groove and in 1993 Lawrence gained independent residency at the
infamous Palm Tree Club based in Edmonton.
At 45, Lawrence hung up his headphones and semi-retired from sound, however, he has never truly let music
go as he still builds his own sounds and can’t stay away from a set of decks at a family function. Lawrence has
a keen and technical ear for music and a comprehension that is so unique. He has 1000’s of vinyl in the vault
and is still an avid collector of all genres. Despite the years going by, the passion for music has not decreased,
which is why now in 2024, Lawrence has decided to pick it back up again, starting with a monthly residency at
the newly opened CRATE Walthamstow.
